Endothelial cells are uniquely responsible for nutrient transport from the vascular lumen to underlying parenchyma. In nutrient-avid tissues like the heart, this must occur rapidly, and without pause, for the life of the organism. Nutrient flux in and out endothelial cells is thus large. Much work has been done on understanding glucose flux, especially in light of the high glycolytic dependence of endothelial cells. Much less attention, however, has been paid to lipid handling by the endothelium. How do endothelial cells take up fat? Transport it? What regulates the process? What are consequences of aberrant lipid handling by endothelial cells? This symposium will address these critical questions with three short talks from leaders in the field. Join us.
